The Season of Awakening

Our selection is vast; TeamBates is ready to help you! Chestnut Group art sale benefitting Shelby Bottoms is going on!

During spring season, there's an inexplicable longing in the air that tugs at our hearts. It's difficult to put a finger on precisely what we desire, but the feeling intensely permeates us...

“It's spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you've got it, you want—oh, you don't quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!” - Mark Twain

Now that the season of awakening has arrived, we are faced with the dilemma of how to allocate our time and energy to be both productive and pleasurable. The beginning of spring is upon us, with its brisk and gorgeous days. However, this time of year may appear to be frustratingly short. There is so much to accomplish, so much we desire to accomplish, yet it appears that there is never enough time. This is likely due to winter; which feels like it lasts forever.

Perhaps you are considering planting flowers. Given that it is just past April 10th, the typical last frost date for our region, it is natural to review last year's notes and contemplate what changes are in store for your garden this year. It's wise to keep in mind that while this is the average last frost date, it doesn't guarantee that we won't have any more frosts. In reality, I wouldn't be surprised if we have a few more ahead of us. I'm not saying you shouldn't plant annuals, but I'm advising you to be prepared with a purpose and a plan, and be ready to deal with whatever nature has in store.

The Chestnut Group has an art show and sale; proceeds benefitting Shelby Park and Bottoms, at the Shelby Park Nature Center, going on Thursday through Sunday!

We know you have gardening questions; submit them here.  We will answer your questions, Saturday morning: “The At Home Show”. We keep you growing!
