The blast from the past that came and went last week is a distant memory. Mild temperatures rule, with a mix of sunny days, and some with rain. Friday looks to be the wettest; followed by some early morning rain Saturday, then cloudy. Sunshine will return Sunday and Monday followed by still more clouds and a chance of rain heading into turkey day. There is no shortage of distractions and excuses to avoid digging in the dirt, but cold weather won’t be one of them.
Digging will be particularly good for planting trees. You know we can’t have too many. It is not possible. With the number of trees that come down due to construction of the ever-expanding Music City, it takes a village to replenish those trees lost, and to mitigate the impact of our rapidly burgeoning populous. The need for additional trees in our landscapes is so great, that it behooves us all to look for opportunities for providing additional canopy to our landscapes. Even if it seems you have no more room for additional plantings, there are still spaces in need.
Perhaps you have a new neighbor to the neighborhood. Perhaps they are horticulturally challenged. As a token of goodwill, you might gift them a tree and plant it for them. That would be a wonderful gift indeed; just digging a hole is no small gesture. All you have to do is educate them about watering, and even that isn’t necessary if they live next door, and you have enough hose.
Maintenance, or rather the lack thereof, is the best reason to plant trees now. It is likely that the only watering needed, until spring/summer, will be the initial watering, immediately after planting. The first watering is imperative to insure proper settling of the soil by removal of air pockets. I’m pretty sure a, ‘Neighbor of the Year’ award, will be under consideration for you!
Now through Tuesday, all deciduous trees, and EarthMix® Landscape™, are 25% off!
