On Thurday, December 22nd, 2022 an arctic bomb cyclone caused an extreme, historic winter weather event that caused widespread chaos well into the Southeastern US. Middle Tennessee was no exception, experiencing essentially a flash freeze with harsh temperatures brought by sub-zero wind conditions.
Thankfully most deciduous plants had already entered dormancy well before this event and enough notice was given so container plants could be moved inside.
Many non-native evergreens, however, especially leafy ones, suffered severe cold damage. The full extent of this damage will not be known until Spring arrives as late as early May.
Bates Nursery advises doing nothing but waiting and observing until signs of growth reveal the amount of damage. Come back to this page for further updates and helpful information as we assess the situation.
