There is no joy that equates being outdoors with nature, unless you prefer being indoors with nature.  Winter has that effect on a lot of people.  Indoor gardening is a newfound passion for many.  Creating the best environment for our living spaces is much more than aesthetic; it hits at the core of our health: Plants add to our lives in a variety of ways, and they don’t talk back, well, not audibly anyway. Perhaps that is why gardeners are so passionate about their gardens.  Plants provide silent companionship.  Amidst the noise of everyday life, gardening is a welcome reprieve.

A wonderful symbiotic relationship develops: Each of us cares for our plants, and in return, they care for us…silently. Making the best use of your time inside or out is a part of that joy.  Here are a few gardening suggestions (with accompanying informative links) as we proceed into 2021 (some are archived Bates Nursery Botanical Boot Camp sessions, others are for upcoming lessons); they are all easy to incorporate into your schedule/ daily routine.  We are not simply your source for plants; we give you the ‘know-how’ for success.

Increase use of organic soils and gardening techniques

Start composting (it’s easy and there is no excuse not to)

Garden in your indoor spaces; plants clean the air

Read the label on all products you use (they hide important information there)

Plant some berry-producing plants (blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and figs are easy to grow and delicious)

Plant pollinators, flowering plants attract birds and bees; we all need to study about them more…

Add a rain garden feature to your landscape; it will help attract nature’s friends

Get a better understanding of how to properly prune fruit trees

Incorporate more natives into your garden; a lot of added value! (200 Level) (100 Level click here)

Plan before planting…if you fail to plan, you plan to fail…
