"The health of a plant depends not only
on genetics, but also on environmental conditions and the care
it receives." (Southern Living Garden Problem Solver)
There are three primary types of plant diseases, bacteria, fungi,
and viruses. These diseases are caused by a specific biological
pathogen. Three elements
are required for the spread of bacteria, fungi, and viruses; the
biological pathogen, a favorable environment, and a susceptible
plant. The triangle to the right illustrates this relationship.
If you remove any one of these elements the disease will not be
present. Click here to learn about
how to eliminate any one of these factors.
Cultural problems are often classified as diseases as well but
are not caused by a biological pathogen. Instead, they are caused
by poor growing conditions (environmental factor) or improper
gardening practices (human factor). This section will discuss how
you can prevent and cure both pathogenic and cultural ailments.
